If you have problems with screen resolution in Linux X window and you have sis 771/671 card use the configuration below.
My VGA controller is:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 771/671 PCIE VGA Display Adapter (rev 10)
Here is my xorg.conf . I'm using it with Kde and Gnome:
